Our Favorite Film Marketing in 2022
Team Smarthouse LOVES a good marketing campaign! So many great films were released in 2022 that had amazing posters and swag — here are some fresh ideas that caught our attention at theaters and on social media:
THE BARBIE TEASER TRAILER
The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s BARBIE (releasing in 2023) was a shot-by-shot play on the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968). A very clever way for Warner Bros to introduce a movie that has people feeling nostalgic for their childhoods. Check out a side-by-side comparison here!
TRIANGLE OF SADNESS BOTOX OFFER
Ruben Östlund’s TRIANGLE OF SADNESS had an amazing poster drop (check out poster gallery below!) but Neon also put together the perfect offer for theater viewers, who could redeem their ticket stubs for 1 free unit of Botox at a local dermatologist’s office. Gimmicky? Sure. But also brillant.
PLANE TRAILER
Animator Jon Bershad tweeted that this trailer contains “the greatest title reveal of all time” – and he’s not wrong! Audiences waited for the title of this movie for two and half suspenseful minutes, only to be greeted by the most obvious choice. Bravo, Lionsgate. Bravo.
SMILE “ACTORS” AT EVENTS
To promote their new horror film SMILE, Paramount placed actors in different public locations where they stood completely frozen with a creepy smile on their face. They were spotted in the background of the Today show and in the stands at several MLB games. UNSETTLING!
GLASS ONION ZILLOW LISTING
Netflix tapped into our obsession with weird real estate listings by putting Miles Bron’s private island palace on Zillow, with fan fave character Derol Zablinski as the 1-star reviewed listing agent. They also get props for sending some of “Jared Leto’s Hard Kombucha” in their swag kits.
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL booking over 200 theaters for its 13th Anniversary (Sundance is doing something similar this year with its restorations of SLAM & THE DOOM GENERATION);Prime Video’s watch party kit for MY BEST FRIEND’S EXORCISM with a copy the book, a mini Ouija board, and tons of 1980’s candy
A24’s Hereditary Gingerbread kit; a fitting way to bring a 2018 release back to the horror forefront.
And here are some posters that made us do the happy dance:
